Ellen's Log Cabin

Sewing machine in good working order. You need to know how
to thread it and how to wind bobbins. Don’t forget your foot
pedal and cord.

All your usual sewing tools, including seam
ripper, scissors.

Neutral thread (cream, beige, grey)

Fabric—please have cut before class.
Fabric requirements:
¼ yard for chimneys

A variety of lights and darks to total approx. 3 yds or more. (You
really can’t have too much. You might not use it all, but you will
want to be able to pick and choose.) You may have as little as one
strip of a fabric or several. Variety is the key.

¾ yd for inner border (You may want to wait to see what your
blocks look like before choosing borders and binding.)

1.5 yd for outer border

½ yd for binding

Choose your log width—either 1.5” wide or 2”. Cut a variety of
light and dark strips in that width, WOF (width of fabric: selvage
to selvage), to total about 3 yards.

From a ¼ yard cut, subcut 24 squares, 3.5” x 3.5”. Traditionally,
these block centers, or “chimneys,” are red or yellow/gold,
signifying a fire in the hearth of the cabin. However, these
chimneys can be any color. All chimneys should be the same
fabric.
